UNBC Professor and team discover unique lake trout

A new form of lake trout has been found, and a UNBC professor was forefront in its discovery.

Dr. Nikolaus Gantner and his co-researchers came across a new type of fish that are born and raised specifically in brackish, or high salinity water:

“It’s basically a mix of fresh water and salt water, and it usually happens when a river runs into the ocean there’s a fjord type area where we have brackish water and it’s then affected by tidal mixings”

Gantner and his team came upon the discovery while studying trout in the Husky Lakes in the Northwest Territories.

He says the most striking thing of all, was that this discovery shows that there are many ecosystem lifeforms that have yet to be found.
