Prince George demonstrators to call for a ceasefire on Sunday

Calls for a ceasefire will once again be heard in Prince George this weekend.

A crowd will gather on Ospika Boulevard outside the CN Centre on Sunday (December 17) from 1:00 – 3:00 as a part of the Pan-Canadian Day of Action Calling for a Ceasefire in Gaza.

Several other cities across Canada will have similar demonstrations held simultaneously with the hope of urging the federal government to call for a permanent ceasefire.

In a release, local organizers said: “We are a small but diverse group of local citizens gravely concerned with events that are unfolding in Gaza and are calling for like-minded individuals in our amazing community to join us in channelling our humanity, our care and our voices to call for an end to the horrific violence we are witnessing in real-time.”

153 countries – including Canada – have just called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Ten countries voted against the non-binding resolution yesterday (Tuesday) at the United Nations General Assembly.

The vote has no legal implications and Israel does not have to follow it but, U.N. resolutions are considered to reflect world opinion according to a U.N. spokesperson.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he spoke with his Israeli counterpart yesterday and outlined Canada’s position — noting the country is committed to working with partners in the region and around the world on an “enduring two-state solution.”
