Northern highways to see big upgrades

The Salmon River Bridge on Highway 97 will be replaced with a new structure that can handle oversize trucks.

The $24 million project will feature a wider deck and bigger load capacity to service LNG, forestry, and oil and gas vehicles.

The government will also extend the 4-lane highway further west from the Bunce Road intersection on Highway 16.

“Replacing an out-dated structure with one that will not restrict heavier, wider and over-height loads when required will help keep Highway 97 a safe and efficient corridor for residents, industries and tourists,” said MLA for Prince George-Mackenzie Mike Morris.

Over the next three years, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest up to $2.5 billion to improve BC’s transportation network.

Construction could also provide job opportunities for young workers.

“This project will also fall under our new guidelines for the use of apprentices
on public projects,” says MLA for Prince George-Valemount Shirley Bond, “This means that contractors will be required to include apprentices in their workforce, giving them a chance to work toward completion of their red seal apprenticeship.”

Construction is slated to begin in 2017.
