Cougars star rookie goaltender picks up another WHL honour

Joshua Ravensbergen continues to be in the zone for the Prince George Cougars.

After picking up three more wins against the Everett Silvertips, Tri-City Americans, and Portland Winterhawks, the 17-year-old from North Vancouver is the WHL Rookie of the Week.

Ravensbergen also made one relief appearance with a 0.84 goals-against average, .973 save percentage, and one shutout this past week (Portland) – his fifth in 11 starts.

“He has proven to the world that he can be a top-flight player in this league and I think his mentality approach to this game is fun to watch.” said Jim Playfair, Cougars associate coach after Sunday’s 4-0 win against the Portland.

The 17-year-old has won his last nine starts in net.

The rookie leads the WHL and CHL in all major goaltending statistics with a meager 1.63 goals-against average, a .944 save percentage, and five shutouts.

Ravensbergen has been on a roll this season, earning WHL Goaltender of the Month in November and WHL Goaltender of the Week twice.

“Watching him grow and start, I don’t think he has any clue on how good he is going to be or how good he is or will develop. That is the fun part of it and I think he just gives our team such confidence,” added Playfair.

Prince George (21-7-0-0) sits first in the WHL and returns home to host the Victoria Royals (16-11-0-2) for a pair of games on December 8 and 9 at CN Centre.
