Life on the road proved to be a little challenging for the UNBC Timberwolves basketball teams.
On the women’s side, the T-Wolves lost handily to the Alberta Pandas – an 81-39 defeat on Friday was followed up by a 71-50 drubbing from the Saville Community Sports Centre.
In the first game of the double-header, UNBC failed to protect the basketball, turning it over 35 times leading to 31 Panda points.
Alberta also dominated in the paint outscoring the T-Wolves 42-18. Claire Signatovich had 14 points for the Pandas while Jenna Harpe added 13. Sveta Boykova had a monster double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds in a losing cause.
On Saturday, the Pandas built up a 42-17 lead and never looked back. All 12 players who dressed for Alberta (4-2) had at least two points including Signatovich had hooped 16. Amrit Manak recorded a game-high 17 for UNBC who dropped to 2-4 on the season.
In addition, the Timberwolves (2-4) were outrebounded 62-34.
In men’s action, UNBC (3-3) dropped a pair of closer games against the Golden Bears (4-2) losing 89-74 (Friday) and 70-65 (Saturday).
After being tied for three quarters, Alberta pulled away in the fourth quarter outscoring the Timberwolves 30-15 at crunch time.
The Golden Bears won the battle on the glass quite handily by a 51-25 margin. Evgeny Baukin scored 23 points for the Timberwolves including a 9-for-13 showing on field goals.
However, Brandon Meiklejohn proved to be the difference notching a heroic 41-point effort for Alberta.
On Saturday, the Golden Bears needed their fourth-quarter heroics again outdueling the T-Wolves 23-16.
Alberta had four players in double-digit points including Adam Paige with 20. Spencer Ledoux recorded 22 points in defeat for the Timberwolves who also had four players with 10 points or more.
Depth proved key in this matchup as the Golden Bears bench outscored UNBC’s 17-3 who only had three subs dressed.
Both UNBC varsity basketball teams are back on the road next weekend in Kelowna against UBC Okanagan Friday and Saturday.
