RCMP warns of contract fraud taking place in Prince George

The Prince George RCMP are warning of a contractor fraud that could be taking place in the community.

A business owner recently contacted police after being approached at by a man claiming to work for a paving company out of the lower mainland.

The man apparently had an Irish accent and provided a written quote to the owner who immediately became suspicious.

The fraudster is apparently requesting cash up front for the job, and then does not complete the work required. The worst part is, this usually becomes a civil issue rather than a criminal one, after the contract has been agreed upon.

Police are asking the public – both businesses and residents – to be wary of anyone approaching them for a service or product where money is exchanged prior to the completion of the work.

The RCMP wants to recognize that there are legitimate uninvited businesses that operate door to door, and who are regulated by consumer protection BC.

Some tips for dealing with door to door businesses:

– These personnel should have no issue providing identification and documentation.

– Confirm the sellers name, address, and phone number

– If an offer is too good to be true, it likely is.

– Call the businesses customer service line, check if the phone number works and ask questions.
