The BC Wildfire Service is busier than ever after an influx of lightning throughout the province.
12 new fires were sparked yesterday, and another 60 as of 1:00pm today contributed to the 211 burning across BC.
Chief fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek says 11 of these fires are in the Prince George fire centre.
“The Prince George fire centre covers pretty much the entire north-eastern quarter of the province,” says Skrepnek, “Most of the activity that is coming as a result of the lightning is in the southern part, so Prince George, Hixton, McBride, and Valemount.”
Skrepnek added the new fires aren’t noted as fires of particular concern, but the sheer number has firefighters working hard.
“They’re going to be hitting multiple targets in a day. So we might have the crew get in, get a rough line around the fire to get it contained, then we’ll move them on to a new incident and have either one of out sustained action crews or contract firefighters come in to mop up the fire. This is definitely where our airtanker fleet is really going to hit its stride.”
Rainy conditions are expected to continue throughout the week, though thunder and lightning warnings remain in place.
