New senior’s complex hasn’t been outruled

There could still be potential for a new senior’s housing complex in Prince George.

A Kamloops development company brought the idea before council last summer, but have yet to make any formal plans.

Quinn Developments has completed two successful similar projects in Kamloops.

The concept brought before council revolves around ageing in place.

“They can leave the homes they’ve lived in all their lives, move into a comfortable condominium, and live entirely independently with no assistance,” explains President Frank Quinn, “But, as they age and decide they want some assistance- maybe they want dinner made, or some work done in cleaning their home- they can acquire those services from the building.”

Then there’s the big question.

Is there a market for senior’s housing in PG?

“As the baby boomers age, we find we want to be close to our families, close to our friends, and the things that we enjoy… And in Prince George, it’s the outdoors,” says Quinn, “Most of my friends who are kind of my age all said their plan when they reached retirement age was to leave Prince George… Well the fact is, most of them -if not all of them- stayed. Prince George has not traditionally been seen as a place where people retire. ”

While the project is not in the planning stages, and no agreements with the city have been made, Quinn says the concept isn’t off the table.

We could hear an update later this summer.
