Overdose memorial and awareness event being held in front of City Hall tomorrow

Positive Living North and Moms Stop the Harm are teaming up to bring an Overdose Poisoning Awareness event and a Candlelight Vigil to Prince George City Hall tomorrow (Thursday).

The event, which runs from 1:00 to 5:00, features Naloxone training, harm reduction education, HIV/HCV and STBBIs testing, as well as presenters, displays, and ribbon making.

Vibusha Madanayake, the Location Manager at Prince George’s Positive Living North branch, said the event aims to raise awareness around overdose prevention.

“We really want to acknowledge tomorrow as International Overdose Awareness Day, and we need to tell everyone ‘Please be aware of what is happening around you.'”

In July, nearly 200 people passed away from toxic drug use across the province, six of those occurred in Prince George.

So far this year, 1,455 people have lost their lives due to the toxic drug supply.

Madanayake said a big part in educating the public comes with Naloxone training, and that a training session will be held each hour from 1:00 to 5:00.

“There will be parents who lost their kids to overdose who will be sharing their stories,” she continued. “This will be the perfect place for everyone to educate.”

The event will be followed up by the vigil, which will run from 7:30 to 9:00.

The event is being held on International Overdose Poisoning Awareness Day.
