Officials give wildfire update

The BC Wildfire Service says 166 fires are currently burning across the province.

12 of these fires are estimated to have started yesterday.

An open fire ban is still in place through BC Wildfire’s Jurisdiction, but PG has lifted the ban within city limits.

Officials think unusual weather could be playing a part in the fires this year.

“This is typically when we do start to see our core season of lightning activity in the province,” says Chief Fire Information Officer Kevin Skrepnik, “We’ve seen an unseasonably, abnormally high amount of lightning early in the season from mid to late June to early July… The real driving factor behind the amount of fires we see is lightning.

The total cost to fight fires yesterday was $2.7 million.

The Martin Mars water bomber has run for three test dumps, but has not yet been called upon in the field.
