Local product O’Brien waived by Cougars, will not return for 2023-24 season

The Prince George Cougars have waived Prince George product Fischer O’Brien.

O’Brien, entering his 20-year-old season, has spent the last three years playing with the Cougars.

In that time, he has accumulated 5 goals and 21 points in 137 games played.

Prior to his time with the big Cougars, O’Brien played for the U-18 Cariboo Cougars across the hallway from the CN Centre in Kin 1.

He had 45 points in four years with the club, and won the league championship in 2018-19.

O’Brien follows Blake Eastman as the second 20-year-old Cougar cut this year.

WHL rules only allow each team to have three “overagers” – 20-year-old players – on their rosters.

The Cougars remaining 20’s are Zac Funk, Hudson Thornton, Tyler Brennan, and Ethan Samson.

Brennan (New Jersey) and Samson (Philadelphia) are both signed by NHL teams, at this point it is unclear if either will return for part, or all of, the 2023-24 season.
