Smoky skies bulletin issued for PG area as cold front pushes smoke west

Update, 1:00 pm, August 8: The Bulletin has been lifted.

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement as smoke from the west has creeped back into the Prince George area.

“We have a pretty persistent westerly flow for today and tonight, so that’s basically pushing all that smoke east towards the Prince George area,” said Environment Canada Meteorologist Ken Dosanjh.

“Behind the westerly winds, it’s kind of like a precursor, is a frontal system that’s currently moving towards Haida Gwaii by this afternoon that’ll start to push more into the interior part of the province.”

Dosanjh said the smoke will persist until tomorrow when we see some showers in the region.

“That’s going to start to mix a lot of the smoke out of the region,” he explained.

“Additionally we also are noticing a slight wind shift to more southerly winds, which there’s left fires down south than there are to the west, so I would imagine the smoke would start to temporarily start to dissipate as the precipitation starts to roll through.”

He added it could return towards the middle of the week.
