Be mindful of your surroundings is the main message from the Northern Bear Awareness Society this long weekend.
The big animals are well out of hibernation and are foraging for food.
President Dave Bakker says while the risk of a bear encounter is low, the potential is there.
Bakker says if your setting up camp, cleanliness is the best way to prevent a bear incident.
He says most bear sightings so far this year are on the fringe areas of the forests.
