Rough river conditions the talk of weekend canoe race

Prince George Search and Rescue had their hands full at the Northern Hardware Centennial Canoe race over the weekend.

The 67 Kilometer race featured over 60 boats, and with rushing water, dangerous currents, and higher water levels, PGSAR’S Dale Bull says even with a safety briefing beforehand, some experienced racers found it challenging:

“… and people who have been doing this for a long time, they encountered the unexpected. Some racers who had been part of this race thirty years ago found that the rapids didn’t run like they used to, and did find new conditions and were challenged by them”

Bull says at least 10 boats capsized during the race, and he says this is a good time to point out the dangers of the fast moving river.

He reminds the public that any boating activity on such a high river, must include the use of a lifejacket.

Something going on in the Prince George area you think people should know about?
