Update, 5:00pm:
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is expecting the Tsah Creek wildfire to grow in the coming days.
Hannah Swift, a BCWS officer, told My PG Now while it is still listed at 50 hectares, it has likely already grown past that.
She said crews made “really good progress overnight” to build a perimeter to the fire’s east and protect Highway 27, which the fire is currently about 4 kilometers away from.
To the north, Swift said some “small scale manual ignitions” will be done to try and clear out possible fuel for the fire if it was to head that direction, closer to Fort St. James.
While Swift does not think Highway 27 will be in any danger, if it does get shut down she said residents in the Fort can still use forest service roads to get in and out, and will not be stuck.
“This is a very high priority for us, and we will continue to resource it as required… if things change and it does become an immediate threat to the highway we would have substantial time to notify communities and ensure they are safely evacuated,” she said. “At this time, it is not as dire as we thought it could be yesterday.”
Original Story, 11:30am:
A lightning-caused fire is out of control 24 kilometers south of Fort St. James.
The BCWS says it was discovered yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon at around 4:20, and has since grown to an estimated 50 hectares large.
It is not currently considered a wildfire of note, but the BC Wildfire service says it could potentially become a threat to Highway 27 between the Fort and Vanderhoof.
