Library wants better access

It’s almost a tale as old as time for the Prince George Public Library, and its crusade for a proper entrance.

“There’s a number of restrictions with the existing access,” says head engineer Frank Blues, “Scooters, are particularly a problem because they’re much larger and the stairwells are narrow.”

The library is only accessible through a bunker in the parkade or outdoor concrete stairs that pose a problem in the winter.

“The existing entrance was always considered to be a service entrance, with futures phases of the library to be developed” says Blues, “The reality is, it never was developed.”

City council set aside $200,000 last October for the Library to complete a scope of work report.

The Library Improvements Working Group has identified a few options for a new entrance, with costs ranging from $1.5 million to $3.9 million.

Blues says different elevations around the building make certain options more difficult than others.

The library hopes to host a Library Entrance Workshop to look at more options in early-mid August.

The workshop findings will be bundled with into an integrated Library Improvements Project, which will factor into the city’s 2016 capital budget process.
