The Makerie closing shop after three years in Prince George

“We cry. It is with the deepest sadness that we announce today that The Makerie, as you know it today, is closing.”

That message was posted to the local craft cafe’s Facebook page over the Canada Day long weekend, announcing that The Makerie is no more.

The business had its challenges right from day one – signing their building lease the same day the world went into lockdown for the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the Facebook post, The Makerie said this left them ineligible for “any business supports through those closures simply because we were a new business. No rent relief. No wage subsidy. No CERB.”

They detailed a following series of unfortunate events and unforeseen challenges they had to face in their three years open.

“If there was just a year of tough times, I could maybe weather that. But if the next three years are going to be as challenging as the last three years, I just don’t have the emotional, mental, financial and other capacity to do it,” the post reads.

They anticipate their final day open to be July 22nd.

They also hope this is not the end of the line, and hinted at some other ideas or approaches to The Makerie name, but gave no specifics.
