Canada Day fireworks in PG cancelled due to wildfire risk

Canada Day celebrations in Prince George will not include fireworks this year.

The decision was made today (Friday) due to the fire risk in the province.

According to a release from the City, campfire bans around the Prince George region have been in place since May 19th.

Fire chief Cliff Warner stated the decision to ban fireworks was in the interest of safety following a tough start to the summer.

“We know people are keen for fireworks, particularly to celebrate Canada Day, but it simply is not worth the risk,” Chief Warner said. “We’ve already seen people in northeast BC evacuated earlier this month due to wildfires, so we need to make sure we’re playing our part and being sensible during the summer months.”

Despite the fireworks ban, the 50th anniversary of Canada Day Festivities in PG at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park will still have several events and attractions for the public to enjoy.
