Cats add to blueline by signing 43rd overall selection Johnston

The Prince George Cougars have signed another one of their 2023 draft picks.

The Cats signed their 43rd overall selection, 6’2″ defenceman Dermot Johnston to a WHL Scholarship and Development agreement.

The product of Olds, Alberta spent last season with the Red Deer Rebels U15 AAA program in the Alberta Elite Hockey League.

He notched 3 goals and 13 assists in 26 regular season games, as well as a goal and two helpers in five playoffs games.

“We are thrilled to have Dermot committed to the Cougars,” said Cougars’ Director of Scouting Bob Simmonds.

“Dermot is a strong skating, elite-level defender. He brings a physical element to his game and thinks the game and thinks the game at a high level. His leadership and detail are very evident when you watch him play and this was consistent all season long.”

Johnston joins 15th overall selection Carson Carels and 37th overall selection Kayden Lemire in signing with the Cats this offseason.
