A five-day drag racing challenge is making a stop in Prince George.
NITRO Motorsports Park on Raceway Road will host the second leg of the BC DragiT Challenge on Friday from 10 am to 3 pm.
Diane Boutilier and her husband Mark are organizing the event – she told MyPGNow.com there will be no shortage of racers.
“We have some enrollments from Oregon, Washington, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northern BC as far up as Dawson Creek, Terrace, the Okanagan, Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland, and even 70 Mile.”
She noted while the majority of racing will occur on airport strips, PG is the only location with a designated track, making it an easy choice as one of the four sites.
“It’s a good running track and the only one in the BC DragiT challenge that’s actually a track facility, the rest of them are airports that have been used in the past for drag racing.”
The Boutiliers organize the drag races in Cache Creek during Graffiti Days. In mid-December, they received approval from 100 Mile House council to use the airport for the DragiT event.
Diane admits they come by the sport honestly.
“My husband was the drag racing director in Port Alberni and they raced at the airport for quite a few years and it was a very good event. He has been in the tech department at different facilities and he has been involved in drag racing for a long time. We saw that this was happening throughout the states and an event in Alberta as well – we thought BC needs it so we brought it.”
Furthermore, no support vehicles will be permitted and racers can stop at select locations to pick up parts or tools they may need.
“All the times through this driving from track to track to track they have to stop at checkpoints that are sponsors who are advertising with us like Chieftain Auto Parts in Prince George and Jim’s Engines is another sponsor we have.”
Seven different classes and prize money will be on hand for the event along with daily awards for categories like Racer of the Day.
The challenge starts and ends in Cache Creek Thursday and Monday (June 19th).
Other stops for the event will also include 100 Mile House (Saturday) and Lillooet (Sunday).
