The Central BC Railway and Forestry Museum was home to the JDRF’s Sun Life Walk to Cure Diabetes in Prince George today. (Sunday)
It was one of many events held around the country.
“JDRF, they fund the most research for type 1 diabetes in Canada,” said Megan Rose, Prince George JDRF Community Coordinator.
“Our goal here for Prince George is $7,000, Prince George is awesome, we always get support.”
Rose added the research is funding 70 human trials for a cure for type 1 diabetes.
“We are so close to finding a cure, its super exciting, and all funds raised today go towards funding those causes, JDRF spends $75 million a year on research.”
Rose said donations had already started coming in before the event started.
During the event, a study on a new app called T1D Reachout that connects people with type 1 diabetes with each other was promoted as well.
“Type 1 diabetics only make up 10 per cent of all diabetics, and were developing an app to just work as a mode of peer support for type 1’s in the province,” said Evelyn De Fauw, a peer supporter of the study.
“They did a study down south in Fraser Health and it went really well, and so they just got extra funding to make it go province-wide. It’s just kind of an app where you can connect with other people, you can talk about really anything, but connect about what device you use, and talk to a group of people who know what it’s like to have type 1.”
De Fauw said the app is currently in development, and they’re expecting the app to be fully launched this fall.
