City council vote on seniors housing complex deferred to next meeting

A seniors housing complex at 4500 Ospika Boulevard will have to wait a little longer.

At tonight’s (Monday) meeting, City Council was set to vote on an amendment to a Section 219 Covenant agreement between the City and the HUB Collection.

The HUB Collection had originally proposed building 256 units of student housing before proposing to build seniors housing at the location.

Council had originally denied the request at their February 6th meeting, before it was brought back to the table tonight.

The HUB Collection also provided a supporting document on the project.

Councillor Ron Polillo moved to defer the vote to a later date.

“One of the things that took particular attention to me was an independent CBRE feasibility study that was conducted by them, that basically concluded that this was ‘a perfect site for a seniors facility,'” Polillo said.

“I don’t see that study in this supporting package. I am suggesting we request to see that study before we make a decision on this.”

Polillo noted it’s a compelling piece for the HUB Collection’s argument for the change, and they don’t have it.

“Councillor Polillo makes a good point, that there’s information that the developers asking us to make our decision off of, but hasn’t provided all the documentation on that stat,” added Councillor Kyle Sampson.

“He’s listed ‘here’s XYZ’, but it doesn’t have the ‘ABC’ portion of that.”

Sampson also asked city administration to ensure they have the information before the next council meeting scheduled for May 8th.

The motion was carried with Mayor Simon Yu, Councillor Trudy Klassen and Councillor Brian Skakun opposed.

Other items discussed tonight included a public hearing on more housing on Ospika Boulevard and a grant for the Cariboo Rocks the North music festival.
