The Prince George RCMP is launching a new restorative justice program.
Restorative justice focuses on healing and giving the wrongdoer the chance to sit face to face with their victim to make things right.
“The idea is to address the harm they’ve done to the community,” says Youth Strategy and Resource Coordinator Melvin Campbell, “We resolve the situation without having to go through a lengthy court process.”
The program will partner with the Prince George Urban Aboriginal Justice Society, but is still seeking volunteers.
Volunteers will receive free training, and will facilitate meetings to ensure justice is carried out.
According to the RCMP, restorative justice leads to lower rates of re-offence, something they saw in Northern BC.
“There is a model out of Williams Lake that we have been working with… It’s a very effective program,” adds Campbell.
Free volunteer training will be held from July 13th-15th.
Anyone interested should contact Melvin Campbell at 250-277-8958, or Linda Parker at 250-561-3319.
