Northern BC set to start construction on new mine

A new mine is set for construction in BC.

The 7th mine opened since 2011, and located just 16 km from the Yukon border, the Silvertip Mine will cost nearly $50 million dollars to complete and will operate for up to 21 years.

Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett, says any tailings concerns will not be an issue:

“So it’ll be an underground mine as opposed to a surface mine and will not need to have a tailings pond on the surface it will store it’s tailings underground”

Bennett says the mine will create 150 to 200 new jobs, most of which will benefit the local Kaska First Nation, who have signed a social economic partnership agreement.
