Lefranc, Herrington take home major honours at Spruce Kings Awards Banquet

The Prince George Spruce Kings handed out the hardware during their awards banquet.

It took place last night (Wednesday) at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel.

One of the big winners was John Herrington who took home Most Valuable Player honours.

He told MyPGNow.com it’s quite an achievement.

“It’s pretty cool. I have been here for three years so I wasn’t really expecting it but it’s nice that it happened. I am looking forward to the playoffs.”

Herrington has built up the reputation of being one of the BCHL’s most feared snipers with his lethal one-time release – a skill he has honed during his time with the Spruce Kings.

“With my shot, I have found a way to get through more lanes. I was struggling a lot my first couple years getting a lot of shots blocked but a lot of shots are getting on net right now.”

Herrington is a true northern at heart. After lighting up the Northern American Hockey League’s U-15 and U-18 levels with the Northeast Trackers, his hockey journey took him to the Cariboo Cougars where he flourished once more.

In the pandemic shortened 2019-2020 campaign, Herrington tallied 34 points in 37 games drawing the attention of BCHL scouts.

The 20-year-old from Hudson’s Hope leads the Spruce Kings in scoring with 47 points.

Herrington is committed to playing college hockey next season at Lake Superior State in Michigan.

In addition, it’s been a gradual rise to prominence for Ben Lefranc.

The 19-year-old from Penticton was named the Spruce Kings Defenceman of the Year. Lefranc is having a career year with 27 points in 49 games.

He told MyPGNow.com confidence has been the key to his development.

“It’s just the little things when you have confidence you can build off the little skills you learn like walking the blueline and shooting the puck with purpose.”

PG (26-20-5-1) finishes its BCHL regular season with a pair of road games in Cranbrook against the Bucks (35-13-1-3) tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday. The Spruce Kings continue to be in a five-team log jam in the Interior Conference standings where they can finish as high 3rd and as low as seventh.

Just three points separate the Spruce Kings, Vernon Vipers, Wenatchee Wild, West Kelowna Warriors, and Salmon Arm Silverbacks with each team in action this weekend.

PG currently sits fifth in the nine-team conference.
