Special Committee says election spending should be limited

Reasonable spending habits are being recommended for local election campaigns.

A special Committee on Local Election Expenses has found that jurisdictions with less than 10,000 in the population should only be spending around $10,000 for mayoral candidates, and $5,000 for Councillors or school trustees.

In populations over 10,000, the committee has recommended a per-capita format. One that reflects the size of the community, and it’s effects on a candidates campaign costs.

In Prince George this would mean a limit of just over $47,000 for Mayor, and just under $24,000 for Councillors. If we look at how this compares back to November 2014’s election Mayor Lyn Hall spent $41,000, while Don Zurovski doled out around $72,000. Meanwhile, Frank Everitt was the highest spending Councillor at around $40,700.

The committee says that spending limits should apply to candidates January 1st in the calendar year of local elections.
