Ministry of Forests says moose, wolf populations holding steady in PG area

Wolf and moose populations in the Prince George-Omineca region have remained stable over the last five years.

That’s according to the Ministry of Forests.

In a statement submitted to Vista Radio, the province expects more sightings now than compared to the past due to development in areas that were previously considered remote.

The ministry added wolf numbers are linked to the population of their prey. In most of the Omineca region, the main prey for wolves is moose.

Moose numbers have been stable east of Prince George and have increased slightly west of city limits over the past five years.

The province noted the best practices to avoid wolf encounters in the backcountry include traveling in groups and making noise, keeping your dogs on a leash, and avoiding feeding wildlife.
