Wheatcroft named WHL player of the month

It is arguably the best trade in Cougars’ history.

Chase Wheatcroft has been named the WHL’s February player of the month, news that shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans.

In just 12 games in the month, Wheatcroft netted 12 goals and 16 assists, including two overtime winners and eight multi-point games. He was also +12 in the month.

This is the second accolade he was given by the league in February, being named player of the week on the 13th.

It is no coincidence that the Cougars had a 10-2-0-0 record over the span of the month.

The 20-year-old was acquired from the Winnipeg Ice in the offseason for a fourth-round pick.

He has shattered all of his career highs with the Cougars this season – last year between his time with the Ice and the Lethbridge Hurricanes he had 16 goals and 22 assists.

With 12 games to go this season, Wheatcroft has 40 goals and 46 assists and is third in the league in points

The Cougars are back in action at home tonight, looking for a doubleheader sweep of the 7th-place Vancouver Giants as they ride a five-game winning streak.

The Cougars won 6-0 last night, a game where Wheatcroft had a goal and three assists.

Puck drops at 7:00.
