Prince George is a little lower than the provincial average when it comes to literacy.
Across Canada 42 percent of residents lack the necessary literacy skills needed to function.
In the 2006 census, 16 percent of Prince George’s population did not have a high school diploma.
Literacy PG Outreach Coordinator Helen Domshy says this means there are some things people can read, but a lot they can not.
“Involving critical thinking skills, perhaps reading advanced documents, think of real estate, thinking of banking documents,” says Domshy, “think of all the different things we do every day, think of all the different literacy skills we need to function these days.”
Domshy says this includes computer, financial skills and making healthy food choices.
