Residents living and working in PG’s downtown core sat down to have coffee with the local RCMP.
The detachment held its Coffee with a Cop event today (Tuesday) where those in attendance had the chance to get to know some officers a little bit better.
Cpl. Jennifer Cooper told MyPGNow.com their downtown sessions at Ristretto’s and Zoe’s Java House have been well-attended.
“We know there are a lot of different interests at play down here and it does receive a lot of focus for a variety of reasons. We are trying to be down here because this area does have a lot of foot traffic as it does have the most coffee shops and places and to make this casual environment successful.”
She added local residents brought up a variety of talking points.
“People are looking at the decriminalization of illicit drugs, so that has come up in conversation a couple of times but we have also had people ask about recruiting the two times we have held this event.”
While detachment members attend community events throughout the year, a more casual setting such as this really helps public relations.
“We do health fairs, we do meet and greets at CNC and you get to talk to people for about thirty seconds, maybe a minute but that’s not really a long enough time to build a relationship and have a conversation with someone. With this Coffee with a Cop event, we find people get to know us a little bit better,” added Cooper.
An afternoon version of the event was held at the Southridge Tim Hortons.
Cooper added last week’s recruiting session in PG saw 24 people attend – a number that is considered high for our city.
