Changes hope to encourage farm families

Some new changes to the Agricultural Land Commission Act are expected to encourage more farming in BC.

The BC government has announced changes to help out farm families.

Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick says one change allows them to build a second house on their property.

“If they have over 50 hectares, so almost a quarter section of land” says Letnick, “if they are a very large farm, under certain conditions, they could put another house on it, hopefully for family or for farm help.”

Letnick says they would also be able to rent out the space.

The other change sees farmers allowing the use of co-operatively owned processing facilities such for crops like berries.
