NEW BC SCHOOL CURRICULUM WILL HAVE ABORIGINAL FOCUS

The British Columbia school curriculum will have a heavy aboriginal focus next year.

Students will learn about the legacy of the country’s Residential Schools this upcoming fall.

The kindergarten to grade 12 program will address aboriginal history, culture, and perspectives.

Kindergarten students will learn about aboriginal’s use of indigenous plants and animals, while fifth grade students will gain knowledge of environmental stewardship.

Fifth grade students will also study past discrimination and Government polices including the Chinese Head Tax.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender says the revised curriculum will promote greater understanding, empathy and respect for aboriginal history among students.
