While social media buzzes, most park goers not against a name change

On Monday night Council voted 8 to 1 in favour of a name change for Fort George Park, and while social media backlash has been apparent, the reaction from park goers seemed to agree with the council tally.

Taking to the Park we tried to find reaction to the move, and while several did not want to be interviewed, they were still quite adamant saying they liked the idea.

Park Goers Cathy and James believe it really boils down to a great sign of respect:

“I guess that’s showing their respect right, for the people that were here before. It seems like they seem to be buried everywhere here. So I think it’s a good thing”

James, while supportive of the change believes the sign of respect is welcomed, as there are far more pressing matters to be focused on than just the name change:

“In that little cemetery part they have in there, yesterday or the day before we cut across and went through; Well its a disgrace! Its overgrown, nothing planted there. I don’t know who is supposed to look after it, the Parks Board or who but they aren’t taking care of it”

Meanwhile, Another park user Jean also felt a name change was reasonable:

“But I think that a name change, its good timing for it yes.”

Jean says language is culture, and even though it may be a little difficult to pronounce she says it will provide a small but important glimpse into the Lheidli T’enneh, their past, and the respect the community has for them.

Cathy and James said they come all the way from College Heights to enjoy the park, and believe a name change will not, and should not hinder their enjoyment of it.

Something going on in the Prince George area you think people should know about?
