BC is moving ahead with its plans to create a world-leading land based spill response regime.
After much engagement with industry, First Nations and local governments, the Province has decided it vital to ensure an effective response to a spill of any hazardous substance.
Minister of Environment Mary Polak says this kind of support has been necessary for quite some time:
“Quite simply, what we have now is outdated. Our experience with smaller spills and near misses, shows the Province is not prepared for a major spill. Our goal is to have a world-leading spill regime in place and we recognize we are not there yet”
Polak spoke about the key elements of the new system which include a certified industry funded response organization.
While new legislative requirements and regulations for spill preparedness, as well as improved geographic based planning – which includes participation from First Nations and local communities – will also be implemented.
Polak says many of these new requirements will also complement a federally run marine response plan, and says the new legislation should be in place by Spring 2016, while the new regime is expected by 2017.
