Timberwolves defeat UBC for first time in men’s basketball

Micha Jessie has only played four Canada West regular season games for the UNBC Timberwolves but he’s already proving to be a thorn in the side of the opposition.

The third-year American transfer from Seattle, Washington led the T-Wolves in scoring during a weekend split against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.

On Saturday, UNBC made history earning its first victory against UBC in men’s basketball, outlasting the T-Birds 100-87 inside the War Memorial Gym.

The T-Wolves were led by five players who reached double-digit points. Jessie, Darren Hunter, Spencer Ledoux, Chris Ross, and Fareed Shittu.

Shittu continued to be a monster on the glass tallying 12 points and 9 rebounds.

UNBC trailed 43-40 at halftime but dominated the second half outsourcing the Thunderbirds 60-44.

The second half of the doubleheader on Sunday proved to be a different story as UBC exacted their revenge with a 93-67 triumph.

Brian Wallack and James Wood carried the T-Birds (1-1) offense, notching a combined 50 points.

UNBC committed 21 turnovers, which led to 29 UBC points. Jessie recorded 12 points in a losing effort for the T-Wolves (2-2)

UBC converted on 45% of its field goals, while the Timberwolves made good on just 33%.

Turnovers continued to plague UNBC, giving it away a combined 53 times over the two games.

Alina Shakirova was the high scorer for the Timberwolves in a losing effort putting up 19 and 17 points respectively.

Depth also proved to be key as UBC’s bench posted 76 points over the two games, compared to UNBC’s 28.

Both UNBC varsity basketball teams are on the road again Friday and Saturday when they take on the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford.
