A manhole replacement project at the high-traffic intersection of Winnipeg and Carney will be going on for another month.
That’s according to BC Hydro.
Now, you may have noticed a Red tower at the excavation site – that is being used to pump out excess water.
Spokesperson, Mike Kellett told MyPGNow.com that the vault replacement is badly needed.
“Basically, what was happening was underground the components of the structure were crumbling and we needed to replace it. Otherwise, there was going to be an electrical malfunction there that would not be pleasant.”
“It’s an old piece of infrastructure that was installed back in the 1960s. At the excavation site, what is happening is that groundwater is seeping into the site, which is as you know, slows things down quite a bit and needs to be accounted for and dealt with.”
“When you have water and groundwater introduced into those situations, it can create quite a complication so this is going to take a little bit more time,” added Kellett.
In addition, Kellett noted another thing complicating the operation is the sheer volume of underground infrastructure either from the city or BC Hydro that also needs to be dealt with.
