An indigenous man who, along with his granddaughter, was detained and handcuffed at a Vancouver bank in 2019, says the absence of the two police officers at an apology ceremony would be “extremely hurtful.
The two officers, who were disciplined for their actions, are not on the list of Vancouver Police Board members travelling to the ceremony in Bella Bella today (Monday).
The groundbreaking ceremony is part of a human rights settlement….but the First Nation says it can’t proceed unless all those who caused the harm are present.
Maxwell Johnson says the officers’ absence would leave the episode unresolved for his family….and raises bigger questions about police accountability for their actions.
