The BC RCMP have announced that Burnaby Constable Shaelyn Yang died this morning while responding to an incident at a homeless encampment.
At 11:00 this morning, Yang was on duty at a homeless camp where she was fatally stabbed. The suspect was shot and injured, and is currently in hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Yang had been an RCMP officer since 2019.
“As the Commanding Officer of the BC RCMP, I can tell you that an on-duty death is the most difficult and heart-wrenching incident we deal with as an organization. Each and every day, police officers say good bye to their loved ones and go off to work to serve their communities with commitment and in Cst. Yang’s case compassion for the people she served,” said Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, the BC RCMP’s commanding officer.
The Independent Investigations Office and Integrated Homicide Investigation Team are both investigating the incident.
