Cougars come back to win in shootout against Giants

It was a back and forth game from the moment the puck dropped until the 6th round of the shootout.

In the end, the Prince George Cougars rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Giants before 2,415 fans in Langley.

It was Carter MacAdams, who is from the Lower Mainland, playing the hero, as he tallied the shootout winner giving the Cougars a victory in their first road game of the season.

The Giants led the game 1-0 after the first period off a goal from Ty Halaburda.

That wouldn’t last long, as two quick Cougars goals from Chase Wheatcroft and Koehn Ziemmer had the Cats up by a goal midway through the second period.

Colton Langkow would tie the game back up at 16:49, sending the game into the third period tied 2-2.

Vancouver came into the third period with a bang, scoring less than 30 seconds into the period.

Riley Heidt brought the score to a tie for the fourth time in the game halfway through the period, 3-3. After a big penalty kill, the Cougars were able to hold on to send the game into extra time.

In the fifth round of the shootout, Ondrej Becher scored to keep the Cougars alive, then MacAdams sealed the deal on the very next shot.

The win boosts the Cougars’ record to 3-2-0-0 and the Giants fall to 1-2-0-2.

The Cougars remain in first place in the BC Division, though the Kamloops Blazers are only two points back with two games in hand.

The Cougars outshot Vancouver 34-32, and were 1/3 on the powerplay and 2/2 penalty killing. The game also featured two fights.

Koehn Ziemmer put up three points in the game, one goal and two assists, and was named the game’s first star.

The draft eligible forward now has nine points in five games, tied for fifth in the WHL so far.

Tyler Brennan got a win in his first game back in net after returning from the New Jersey Devils’ training camp.

The Cougars next stop is south of the border, they will close the mini weekend road trip tonight against the Everett Silvertips (3-1-0-0) tonight at 6:05.
