Salvation Army experiencing estimated 15% increase in people needing food bank

Thanksgiving is always a very busy season for food banks across the country.

This year will be no different, as the cost of living and inflation remain sky high, Prince George’s Salvation Army food bank says they have fed “3000 mouths” in the last month, an estimated increase of 15% over the average for this time of year.

This is according to the Community Ministries Director Roy Law, who said “there is a little bit of an increase. As we all know, our own belts have been tightening, and those people who were on that fence have been forced to reach out.”

For thanksgiving, Law said the Salvation Army can provide “the basic human needs of food and such, and if there is a family in need and wanting, we will try to help provide them a little thanksgiving dinner.”

As more people have been utilizing the food bank, Law said they have noticed the shelves are a little less full than normal, but he also said “Prince George is a town that provides, always as a community… we are keeping our heads above water.”
