The PG Chamber of Commerce is in support of an online voting system for the 2018 municipal elections.
As a resolution put forward by the group lobbying for the move has been passed by the BC Chamber and may soon go to the Canadian Chamber as well.
President Cindi Pohl says this will help sole business owners who may not be able to leave due to time constraints:
“We look at small businesses and we have all these single business owners with very few employees, and they are unable to get away to vote. I mean, there are laws that they have to let their employees vote, but that doesn’t mean that they can necessarily get out themselves, so this could potentially help them”
She also believes that it will encourage a large number of younger voters to cast their ballots as well.
However, an independent panel on internet voting believes the secrecy of the ballots and the overall security of internet voting would come into question.
Meaning that an independent technical committee would also be needed to implement and support approved voting systems.
