MLA Shirley Bond donates defibrillator to Guatemalan medical clinic

“Defibrillator access is deeply important to my family, and I’m so honoured we can expand our advocacy efforts from here in Prince George to help those abroad as well.”

Prince Geroge-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond has donated an automated external defibrillator (AED) to a remote Guatemalan clinic in Petén through the ‘Big Bond Bike’ Heart and Stroke Foundation team.

Previously, through the Bill Bond memorial fund, the Bond family has also provided AEDs in public spaces in Prince George, McBride, Dunster, and Valemount.

“Every minute counts when responding to a sudden cardiac arrest and we know we can double the low survival rate from out of hospital cardiac arrest if we make sure that more people know CPR and that AEDs are available” said Bond.

The donation was publicly made yesterday (August 19) to Team Rubicon’s Cristian Silva, who will bring it back to the Guatemalan community.

Bond said this came about “when Cristian said that an AED would be beneficial in this remote medical clinic, our family and the Big Bike Team immediately knew this was something we wanted to do. We were inspired by Cristian and his passion for making a difference both at home and abroad.”

She also took time to comment on the removal of John Rustad from the BC Liberal party.
