A group of students riding bikes between Austin, Texas, and Anchorage, Alaska to raise cancer awareness will be stopping in Prince George on Saturday.
The Texas 4,000 is an organization to cultivate student leaders and engage communities in the fight against cancer.
“The riders are trying to engage people in the fight against cancer, so they’re talking individually as they ride every day,” said Scott Crews, Executive Director.
“In the cities they stop in and they’re hosted in, they’re meeting with people in the community to talk about cancer prevention and awareness.”
Among them is Audrey DeJong, who lost her mother to breast cancer when she was eight.
“Not getting to know her, and not getting to know her personality, and growing up in a single-parent family was hard,” DeJong said.
“I want to honour her memory by doing this ride, and I want to honour other breast cancer patients and survivors.”
She said the group will have a rest day on Sunday and will be hosted in PG by the Elizabeth Fry Society, before moving on to Burns Lake.
Collectively, riders have helped raise nearly $13M dollars, pedaled more than 5.7 million collective miles.
