Ceremony concerning unmarked children’s graves held in Kamloops

Yesterday (Monday) marked the one year anniversary since the discovery of unmarked children’s graves at a former residential school in Kamloops.

A special ceremony took place in Kamloops, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the memorial and met with First Nations leaders.

An estimated 215 burial sites were found on the land.

However, band officials say they’re now preparing to exhume the remains to try to identify them.

Since the discovery, thousands more unmarked graves have been found at residential school sites across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor-General Mary Simon committed to carrying forward the stories of the children who went missing.

She added “We mourn with you. We stand with you. We believe you.”
