Vanderhoof braces for flooding

The District of Vanderhoof is getting set for flooding that could happen in the area.

The Nechako River is currently on flood watch and running at 560 cubic meters a second, with that rising to 600 by early Sunday.

Chief Administrative Officer Evan Parliament says they are working with contractors to prevent extensive flooding.

“We are installing gabion baskets, at strategic locations,” says Parliament, “we are mobilizing our volunteers, to make sure they on standby for sandbag deployment.”

Parliament says they are focusing on Reid Drive, Sandy Beach Road and the Ephrom Properties where flooding was the worst in 2007.

He says people living in those areas have already been contacted and told to move any valuables out.

Rio Tinto Alcan will be hosting a community meeting to discuss the river’s flow on Thursday at 7 pm at the Friendship Centre.
