UNBC opens Ceremonial Fire Area

The University of Northern BC has a new gathering place on their campus.

The University opened their new Ceremonial Fire Area in Agora Courtyard Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s really a piece that really highlight’s UNBC’s commitment to indigenization and reconciliation,” said Brandon Prince, UNBC Manager of Indigenous Initiatives.

“It’s kind of a centrepiece out front to add to the university’s mix of buildings. It’s an area where we can celebrate Indigenous culture.”

Price said the area has been in the works for about a year.

He added the school is working on other initiatives  towards reconciliation.

“There are a few other things planned, but nothing concrete at this point,” Price said.

“We are planning a memorial for the residential school children, for Kamloops and all the other children that have been found since.”
