City of PG public notices could come to different mediums

The City of Prince George is looking at other methods to get their messages out.

An amendment to the Community Charter is now allowing municipalities to provide public notices in more means than just the local newspaper, and last night’s (Monday) City Council meeting discussed the options.

A report will come to a future council meeting with a stronger idea of where they can post.

Councillor Cori Ramsay noted that advertising is pretty common on news websites, but also would like to see some other alternatives.

“One of the things I would like to see in the report when it returns is just some consideration for accessibility, as I know not everyone has a digital device.”

Councillor Kyle Sampson said he would like to see something that has a broad reach that has a well rounded approach.

Councillor Terri McConnachie wanted to emphasize that City staff will be looking for options that are reliable, suitable and accessible in the vein of openness and accessibility, noting that things were a little different in the past.

“I remember back in the day there was always an argument about which newspaper was going to get the contract with the City of Prince George, and somebody got it because because somebody else was too hard on the current council.”

She added that this will be for staff to look into, not the City Councillors.
