Local artist Elmer Gunderson created and donated a piece of art to raise funds to support Ukrainians who could be coming to Prince George in the future.
The St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in PG will plan an event where that artwork, as well as other items will be used to raise funds.
“So this was one of the castings I had mold, and hadn’t finished it yet. So after seeing what was going on in Ukraine, and being torn apart by it, it was something I wanted to do,” said Gunderson.
“So I had this piece sitting there, with the colours, blue and yellow of Ukraine, which is so dominant right now, it’s colours we’ll never forget for the rest of our lives. I wanted incorporate those into the mask. And the tears go without saying with what’s going on with the people there.”
Father Andrii Chornenkyii of the St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church said it means a lot to receive something that has so much feeling put into it.
“The moment you create this masterpiece, you know, you put all your heart and all your emotion. So those tears I believe are not only painted, they’ve been already in this artist Elmer. It’s sharing more than just your money, it’s not just showing your support, it’s actually sharing your heart.”
There’s no word yet on any Ukrainians coming to Prince George, but it was noted around 30 households in the area had already said they would welcome those who were displaced into their homes.
Prince George- Valemount MLA Shirley Bond said PG would be a great place for any Ukrainian families who come to Canada.
“The most important thing now is to send a message to the provincial and federal governments that Prince George is ready and willing. Not only that, but we have much more affordable community, we have a lot of Ukrainian people here who could welcome families here.”
