Ten new homes will be built on Western Road in Western Acres after a land use contract was discharged during Monday’s (March 14th) Prince George City Council meeting.
Residents showed up to the meeting, showing concern for the development, saying that the lagoon would not be able to handle the extra homes going into the community.
They also showed concern for the water supply, as well as the traffic that would increase along Western Road, which also has an elementary school at the end of it.
Blake McIntosh, Director of Civic Operations noted that upgrades to the lagoon were on the way.
“For this lagoon rerouting upgrade, there was a capital project for 2022 that was approved by Mayor and Council. It went out for tender, public bid, it’s been awarded, so the detailed design will occur shortly here.”
McIntosh noted that there is increased supply capacity for water supply as well, but noted that they may need to assess it for maintenance.
No traffic study was done, due to the city feeling that it wasn’t needed.
Residents also suggested that there needs to be less, better spaced development there, noting that there were concerns with water drainage as well.
Councillor Terri McConnachie said that there wasn’t enough information to oppose the project, adding that more housing was needed in our community.
Councillor Kyle Sampson felt the opposite, noting that there wasn’t enough certainty with capacity.
“I’m not hearing clearly that we have capacity with some of our infrastructure, whether it’s the well water capacity, or the waste water.”
The zoning bylaw was lifted in the end, with the vote being split 6-2, with Councillors Kyle Sampson and Brian Skakun in opposition, and Councillor Murry Krause not in attendance.
