“75% of our 204 First Nations communities do not have high speed internet.”
That’s according to BC Assembly of First Nations Chief Terry Teegee, who said many of their remote communities have either very spotty internet access, or none at all.
The province and the federal government created a joint fund of $830 million that will go towards hooking up the rest of BC to high speed internet, with a timeline of reaching that goal set for 2027.
Teegee stressed how important internet access can be, whether it’s for health, economic purposes, or education.
“And as you can see, over the last couple of years, how important it is to have high speed internet, whether it’s for meetings or educational purposes during this pandemic.”
“It’s not building infrastructure and highways, but to have high speed internet really bodes well for many First Nations, or many communities to have some sort of structure, and infrastructure for economic development,” added Teegee.
The province estimates there are 115,000 homes across BC that still have no internet access.
